'Dons Drop MIVA Contest 3-1 to Loyola Chicago
3/12/2021 10:04:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team took on the Loyola Chicago Ramblers on Friday night (March 12) on Arnie Ball Court, but couldn't maintain the momentum of a set one victory and fell 3-1 (28-30, 30-28, 25-23, 25-22).
Set One
The Ramblers pushed their lead to 11-7 on a Cole Schlothauer kill assisted by Garrett Zolg. The Mastodons used a three-point scoring run of their own that included a service error, a kill by Vicente Ibarra and a Loyola Chicago attack error to go up 20-19. The Ramblers' defense wasn't going to back down and neither did the 'Dons, forcing the set into extra points. The 'Dons turned away one Loyola set point and it took until the fourth Mastodon set point before Pelegrin Vargas put the set away.
Set Two
Early in set two, the Ramblers were up 4-1, but the lead was short lived after Vargas shut down Loyola Chicago's defense with a kill, tying up the score at 10. It seemed as if the Ramblers found their groove again at 14-11, but Loyola's attack errors caught up to them and Ibarra had a kill to allow the 'Dons to lead 15-14. The Mastodons pulled ahead 21-17 when Ibarra had his only ace of the match. Loyola would soon go on their biggest scoring run of the night, six-points, and push the set to extra points and eventually win 30-28.
Set Three
The Mastodons trailed 17-13 before tying the set back up at 19. Vargas had two kills and a block in the 6-2 run. The Mastodons would never take the lead and Loyola Chicago took set three 25-23 after recording just one hitting error in the game. Vargas led the Mastodons in set three with eight kills.
Set Four
It seemed as if set four was all Mastodons as they took an 8-3 out of the gates. After a block by Richie Diedrich and Vargas, the 'Dons kept the lead at 21-18, but the Ramblers would go on a five-point run at the very end to take the set 25-22. Ibarra earned seven of the Mastodons' 14 kills in the set.
