FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Sunny skies, a cool breeze and an overtime goal were all the Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team needed to defeat Youngstown State 2-1 on Wednesday (March 17) at Zollner Stadium.
The Penguins got on the board first after Marcella Sizer chipped the ball over the Mastodons' goalkeeper Lorah Pund in the fifth minute. Youngstown State would rest on the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the half. The 'Dons led the first 45 minutes with five shots on goal compared to the Penguins' two.
A physical second half saw the 'Dons get the tying goal with less than five minutes left in the game. Cesiley LaCourt passed to Kailyn Wade and Wade lobbed it over the Penguins goalkeeper for a Mastodon goal. It was Wade's third goal of the season. Rylee Vruggink had a chance to put the 'Dons up with a minute left but her shot was stopped.
Overtime lasted a little less than five minutes when Megan Sinnott passed to Vruggink. Vruggink sent a ball from the far right into a crowded box. Vruggink's shot slipped through the crowd and into the lower left portion of the goal to end overtime and give Purdue Fort Wayne the victory.
Purdue Fort Wayne finished with 16 shots with 10 on goal while the Penguins only had seven shots with three on goal. Vruggink and Wade led the 'Dons with four shot attempts while Morgan Reitano had three. Pund had two saves to lead Purdue Fort Wayne's defense.
Wednesday was the Mastodons' first overtime game of the season.
The 'Dons move to a record of 3-3 (2-3 Horizon League) and Youngstown State drops to 0-6 (0-6 Horizon League). Purdue Fort Wayne will stay in Fort Wayne for their next matchup against Northern Kentucky at 12 p.m. ET.
