'Dons Host Northern Kentucky at Hefner on Wednesday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After playing at different locations in Fort Wayne for most of the season, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team will return to the Hefner Soccer Complex on Wednesday (March 24). The 'Dons will face off against Northern Kentucky at 12 p.m. ET on Hefner Field #2.

SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
Purdue Fort Wayne is returning to Hefner Field #2 after a 2-1 overtime victory against the Youngstown State Penguins on Wednesday (March 17). The 'Dons faced off against the Penguins at Zollner Stadium at Concordia Lutheran High School. At 86:38, Gabrielle Fanning passed to Kailyn Wade and Wade lobbed it over the Penguins goalkeeper for a Mastodon goal. It was Wade's third goal of the season. Overtime lasted a little less than five minutes when Megan Sinnott passed to Rylee Vruggink. Vruggink sent a ball from the far right into a crowded box. Vruggink's shot slipped through the crowd and into the lower left portion of the goal to end overtime and give Purdue Fort Wayne the victory.
SCOUTING THE NORSE
Northern Kentucky is coming to Indiana with a four game unbeaten streak after taking down Cleveland State 2-0 on Wednesday (March 17) at the NKU Soccer Stadium. Sofia Wilmes scored the opening goal in the fourth minute with assists by Kailey Ivins and Lindsey Meyer. Kayla Wypasek scored in the 73rd minute to insure the victory for the Norse. On the season, Ivins and Wilmes each have a team-best three goals. Mimi Stines has 19 saves in 558 minutes this season.
SERIES HISTORY
The Mastodons and Norse have not played each other since August 21, 2015 when Northern Kentucky earned a 3-1 victory. Kallianne Mogler scored the Mastodons' lone goal in the second half, off of an assist from Rachel Good. The Mastodons' lone win the series came in 2014 when the 'Dons won 6-4. The other two meetings came in 1999 and 2000 when both teams were in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as NCAA Division II members.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
The 'Dons will play their second straight outdoor match of the season on Wednesday (March 24). So far, Purdue Fort Wayne has played five matches indoors and only one outdoors. The one outdoor contest was last week, when the 'Dons won 2-1 over Youngstown State.
LEADERS
Rylee Vruggink and Kailyn Wade each lead the team with three goals. Vruggink also has two assists to lead the team with eight points. Lorah Pund has started all six games in goal for the 'Dons. She has 30 saves on the season. She had two saves in the Mastodons' win over Youngstown State last week.
THAT'S A BIG ROSTER!
This year's roster of 27 is the program's largest roster in program history. The 2020-21 roster has 11 freshmen, nine sophomores, two juniors and five seniors.
