MVB Sweeps No. 10 McKendree 3-0 on Saturday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team swept the No. 10 McKendree Bearcats 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 32-30) on Saturday (March 27) on Arnie Ball Court. This is the first time this season that the Mastodons have defeated a top 10 opponent.
Set One
The 'Dons took the lead early 8-3 after a four-point run. Pelegrin Vargas tallied back-to-back kills and Bryce Walker earned a block solo. McKendree tied up the set at 16 after an attack error by the 'Dons and a kill by Patrick Ross. The Bearcats were able to get the lead 23-22, but the 'Dons were able to make a comeback and Vicente Ibarra closed set one 25-23 with back-to-back kills.
Set Two
McKendree seemed to have found its rhythm in set two. The Bearcats kept up with the Mastodons and tied up the set five times before taking the lead 10-9. Vargas had another two kills to tie up the set again at 19 and then had a service ace to take the lead 21-20. After an attack error by the Bearcats and and a kill by Ibarra, the Mastodons took set two 25-23.
Set Three
The Bearcats took the lead 7-5, but the Mastodons were able to keep the score close and tied it up at 15. McKendree was at set point 24-23 when Ibarra slammed down a kill. Vargas took the 'Dons to set point 31-30, then Walker and Ibarra blocked McKendree's attack to take set three 32-30.
Purdue Fort Wayne Individual Stats
Pelegrin Vargas led the Mastodons with 16 kills and hit .297.
Vicente Ibarra was the second 'Don who reached double-digit kills with 14.
Sean Califf tallied 37 assists with six digs.
Troy Gooch had 12 digs.
McKendree Individual Stats
Patrick Ross had 11 kills and hit .375.
Zach Schnittker earned eight digs and three kills.
Ryan Serrano had 30 assists in three sets.
Notes
The 'Dons out hit the Bearcats with .271 to .228.
This is the first time this season that Purdue Fort Wayne has defeated a top ten team.
The Mastodons had six service aces compared to McKendree's two.
