Mastodons Hit the Road One Last Time to Play Oakland

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team will hit the road one last time for the 2020-21 regular season and face off against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at the Grizz Dome on Tuesday (March 30) at 10:30 a.m.

SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
Purdue Fort Wayne is traveling to Oakland after a 1-0 loss against first place Northern Kentucky. Redshirt senior and goalkeeper Lorah Pund had five saves and kept Northern Kentucky off the board in the first 45 minutes. NKU's Kaya Vogt was able to find the back of the net in the 65th minute from a strike well outside the box. Tia Johnson recorded three shots with Rylee Vruggink, Zoe Greenhalge, Isabelle Wissel and Morgan Reitano each contributing one. Pund tallied five saves in 90 minutes. The 'Dons have allowed one or zero goals in four games this season.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Oakland will host the Mastodons after a 1-0 shutout against Wright State on March 24. Macey Wierenga earned her second goal of the season just over 10 minutes left in regulation time. This was the Golden Grizzlies' fourth-straight shutout. Oakland held Wright State to just two shots on goal. Sami Lopez leads the team with six assists and three goals.
LAST TIME
It has been over three years since the Golden Grizzlies and Mastodons met. On August 13, 2017, Purdue Fort Wayne hosted Oakland for an exhibition match at the Hefner Soccer Complex where the Golden Grizzlies would end up victorious with a 1-0 win. The last time they met for real was September 21, 2013 when Oakland won 3-0.
THE GREAT INDOORS
The 'Dons have been played their last two matches outdoors in Fort Wayne, but will return to indoor play at the Grizz Dome in Rochester, Mich. Five out of the seven matches so far this season have been indoors for the Mastodons. The last two games in Fort Wayne have been at Zollner Stadium and Hefner Field #2. Tuesday's game will be the final indoor match for Purdue Fort Wayne this season.
LEADERS
Rylee Vruggink and Kailyn Wade each lead the team with three goals. Vruggink also has two assists to lead the team with eight points. Gabrielle Fanning is tied with Vruggink with two assists in seven games. Lorah Pund has started all six games in goal for the 'Dons. She has 35 saves on the season. She had two saves in the Mastodons' win over Youngstown State last week.
THAT'S A BIG ROSTER!
This year's roster of 27 is the program's largest roster in program history. The 2020-21 roster has 11 freshmen, nine sophomores, two juniors and five seniors.

Purdue Fort Wayne will head back to Fort Wayne, Indiana for their final regular season match at the Hefner Soccer Complex on Monday (April 5) against IUPUI. Monday's match will begin at 4 p.m. after the men's soccer game at 1 p.m. against Wright State. Note, those are different times than were originally announced at the start of the season. The final home match will serve as senior day where Cesiley LaCourt, Eliese LaCourt, Lorah Pund and Emily Gunsett will be recognized.
