Women's Soccer Earns 1-1 Tie at Oakland in Final Road Match
3/30/2021 2:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer
ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team picked up a 1-1 (2 OT) tie at Oakland on Tuesday (March 30) in the final road match of the season for the Mastodons.
It was a nice result for the Mastodons against an Oakland team with the second most points in the Horizon League. Oakland entered the contest on a four-game win streak.
Oakland's Alexa Sabbagh scored for the Golden Grizzlies at the 33rd minute after passes by Hollie Clement and Sami Lopez. Oakland rested on the 1-0 lead the remainder of the first half.
It stayed a 1-0 game until 64:24 when Mackenzie Evans scored her first collegiate goal after a corner kick by Rylee Vruggink. Cesiley LaCourt took the pass from Vruggink and sent the ball to Evans where the sophomore found the back of the net two yards outside the goal box. Vruggink and Kailyn Wade attempted to score one final time before regulation ended but were unsuccessful. At the end of 90 minutes, the score was tied 1-1.
The first overtime featured little offense, with the Golden Grizzlies and 'Dons each recording one shot on goal.
The second overtime saw Purdue Fort Wayne control the majority of the play with the 'Dons taking all four shots in the period. The final attempt came with less than 15 seconds left when Emily Gunsett's shot was saved to make the final 1-1.
Both goalkeepers had three saves each. Oakland led 11-8 in shots and tied 4-4 on goal. Vruggink and Wade led the way with two shots while Gunsett, Evans, Kelsey Gallagher and Morgan Reitano contributed one apiece.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to a record of 3-4-1 (2-4-1 Horizon League) while Oakland moves to a record of 5-2-2 (5-2-2 Horizon League).
The Mastodons will head back to Fort Wayne, Indiana for their final regular season match at the Hefner Soccer Complex on Monday (April 5) against IUPUI. Monday's match will begin at 4 p.m. after the men's soccer game at 1 p.m. against Wright State. Note, those are different times than were originally announced at the start of the season.
The final home match will serve as senior day where Cesiley LaCourt, Eliese LaCourt, Lorah Pund and Gunsett will be recognized.
