Eric Brinker Finishes in Top Five Through 18 Holes

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. - Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf senior Eric Brinker finished the opening round of the Benbow Invitational in a tie for fifth place with a 76. The Mastodons shot 316 as a team on Monday (March 8) to place sixth with 18 to play.
Brinker was 5-over par through his first five holes, but was even the rest of the way. He had 12 pars and a birdie which came on the 526-yard par-5 second hole. He shot an even 35 on the front nine with just one bogey.
Kasey Lilly was just one shot back of Brinker with a 77, which tied him at ninth. He also birdied No. 2, while also getting a birdie two on the 198-yard 14th. Lilly had 10 pars with his two birdies.
Luke Miller competed as an individual, recording the best non-team score in the field. He shot a 78 for a tie at 12th. Burke Pitz shot a 79 for the team score with 12 pars for his day. Pitz finished in a tie for 20th.
In his first action as a collegian, Reece Compton shot an 84 to round out the team score. His round featured eight pars. Jacob Deakyne shot an 88 with six pars.
Parker Deakyne also competed as an individual, tying with Pitz for 20th.
As a team, the Mastodons' 316 was sixth through 18 holes. The 'Dons were ahead of the only other Horizon League program in the field, Detroit Mercy, which shot 323 for eighth. Drexel was the best on day one with a 300, led by Angelo Giantsopoulos, who led the field with a 70.
The second round of the Benbow Invitational starts at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 9 with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
