MVB Ends Season After 3-2 Loss Against No. 13 McKendree

LEBANON, Ill. - After extra points in three different sets at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center, the sixth-seeded Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team saw their 2021 season come to an end at the hands of third-seeded and No. 13 in the nation McKendree 3-2 (27-25, 20-25, 29-27, 25-27, 15-13) in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Quarterfinals on Saturday (April 10).
Set One
The Mastodons took the lead early in set one with a 4-2 advantage after a bad set by McKendree. It wasn't long until Purdue Fort Wayne went on a four-point scoring run which included two kills by freshman Vicente Ibarra and a kill by Jon Diedrich, advancing the score to 10-6. Back-to-back kills by Ibarra and Pelegrin Vargas took the score to 17-12. The 'Dons were at set point 24-22 before McKendree went on a 3-0 run, allowing the Bearcats to reach set point. The Bearcats would win set one 27-25 after two errors by the Mastodons.
Set Two
Richie Diedrich tallied two kills in the first few points and helped the 'Dons tie up set two at six. The Mastodons went on their first of three 3-0 scoring runs after two errors by the Bearcats and a kill by Ibarra, giving the 'Dons the lead at 9-7. Ibarra and Vargas took the Mastodons lead even further after three straight kills, extending the score to 16-13. An ace by Vargas and an error by Schnittker ended set two with a Mastodon victory 25-20.
Set Three
McKendree seemed to have control in set three with a lead of 15-12 before Bryce Walker and Jon Diedrich combined on a block to put the 'Dons up 16-15 at the end of a four-point run. The Mastodons had four set points but McKendree denied each one before winning the game 29-27.
Set Four
The 'Dons found their rhythm halfway through set four after three errors by McKendree and an ace by Frederico Santos, taking the lead 15-14. The Bearcats came back to lead 22-19 after an attack error by Richie Diedrich. Two kills and an ace later, the Mastodons tied up the set at 22. McKendree got to set point, but the Mastodons weren't done yet and Ibarra took control with a kill and the 'Dons led 25-24. A block solo by Jon Diedrich would close out set four 27-25 and the MIVA Quarterfinals match was heading into set five.
Set Five
Set five seemed to be going Purdue Fort Wayne's way with a 6-4 lead. McKendree knotted up the score but Vargas earned another kill to break a tie and put the 'Dons up 12-11. It would be the Mastodons' final lead of the game. McKendree scored four of the final five points of the set and took the dramatic fifth set.

Vicente Ibarra totaled 21 kills and 12 digs.
Pelegrin Vargas led the 'Dons with 23 kills in his final match as a Mastodon.
Frederico Santos had 48 assists and 18 digs.
Troy Gooch recorded 14 digs.

Ethan Carroll earned 13 kills with 10 digs.
Ryan Serrano collected 56 assists.
Zach Schnittker had the Bearcats' two service aces.
