CARMEL, Ind. - Holly Anderson led the Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team to third place with 18 holes left at the Lady Jag Invite on Monday (April 12).
The weather that started as dreary and chilly turned about the same time as the 'Dons made the turn, setting up for some better scores on the back nine.
Anderson shot a 77 with a 37 on the back. She had birdies on 15 and 18. She sunk a mid-range putt on 18 to move into a tie for seventh.
Following the trend of the team, Emma Schroeder turned in an even 36 on the back nine, setting her up for a 78 and an 11th place spot. She had a birdie on the par-3 11th, going with seven pars on the back. She had 10 pars total. Linnzie Richner tied her teammate with a 78, but she performed better on the front nine with a 38. She started off her round with three straight pars, then had two birdies and one more par before making the turn. Her birdies came on holes five and eight, the latter of which was a 512-yard par-5, the longest on the course. She finished her day with 10 pars to go with her pair of birdies.
Kennedy Brooker shot an 82 to tie for 21st. She found a birdie on the par-5 12th, which required a well-placed second shot with troubled water on the left. She was the fourth taken score for the team.
Laura Caetano and Anna Olafsdottir also played for the team score, shooting 83 and 84, respectively. Caetano had nine pars and a birdie on 17. Her birdie came on the 489-yard par-5, which had a hard dogleg-right around a large pond. Olafsdottir carded nine pars, pacing the way for a back-nine of 39.
Arny Dagsdottir and Luiza Caetano competed as individuals, shooting 83 and 90, respectively.
As a team, the Mastodons shot a 315, which put them in third place. They are ahead of Cleveland State (318) and Northern Kentucky (327). Host IUPUI is leading the field through one day with a 301. IUPUI's Annaliese Fox is the individual leader, but is not playing as a part of the team.
The Mastodons will start round two at 10:30 on Tuesday morning.
