Kasey Lilly Earns Top-Five Finish With Record-Tying Round

SPRINGBORO, Ohio - Thanks to a final round of 66 (-5) on Monday (April 19), Purdue Fort Wayne men's golfer Kasey Lilly finished in a tie for fifth at the Wright State Invitational, marking the first top-five finish of his career. The sophomore's 66 tied the Purdue Fort Wayne 18-hole record.
Lilly led the Mastodons to a fourth-place finish with a 298-305-289-892. The 'Dons were the second-best of the nine Horizon League teams in the tournament, trailing just Wright State (873).
Lilly's 66 featured four birdies, an eagle and just one bogey. He opened his round with three straight pars before carding a birdie on 10. He then had a birdie on 12 and another on 16. After making the turn, he birdied the 398-yard par-4 first hole, then eagled hole four for the second time in three rounds. For the tournament, he carded a 75-73-66-213. His 66 was the best 18-hole round in the field.
Luke Miller finished the tournament in a tie for 21st, carding 75-74-76-225. In his final round, Miller also eagled the 553-yard fourth hole. He started his day with a birdie on hole seven, then another on 12. He had eight pars to go with his two birdies and eagle.
Parker Deakyne was two shots behind Miller at 74-79-74-227, setting him up to tie for 29th. Deakyne had three birdies in his last round, which came on the eighth, 14th and 17th holes. Eight and 17 were both par-3s. He parred 10 holes to shoot his 74 (+3).
Burke Pitz shot 77-79-75-231 to tie for 50th. He also had three birdies on Monday, registering fours on holes four and nine and a three on 14. He had just one bogey in his first nine holes.
Jacob Deakyne had a par-filled round, turning in 14 of them for a 74-84-74-232. His 14 pars were coupled with a birdie on hole nine to be the fourth score counted for the team's last round.
The Mastodons finished the tournament with four eagles, the most out of any team in the field. Lilly was one of only three players to record two eagles in three rounds. Wright State won the tournament with Raider Austin Schoonmaker tying Valparaiso's Caleb VanArragon for first individually at 210.
Purdue Fort Wayne will head to the Horizon League Championship next week on Sunday (April 25). The 'Dons will play three rounds in three days at the Kampen Course at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
