Miller and Lilly Highlight Mastodons' First Day at #HLGolf Championship

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Thanks to opening rounds of 72 (E) from Luke Miller and 73 (+1) from Kasey Lilly, the Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team sits in fourth place at the Horizon League golf championship.
Played on the Kampen Course at Purdue University, the opening round of the tournament saw two players shoot 2-under 70s: Oakland's Thomas Giroux and Wright State's Mikkel Mathiesen.
Miller sits in third through 18 holes, just two shots back of the lead. The junior from Fort Wayne carded even 36's on both nines. On the front, he had birdies on two and eight. The former was a 165-yard par-3 and the latter was a 383-yard par-4. He drained his birdie putt from the back side of the green on eight. On the back nine, Miller had back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15, both of which were short par-4s.
Lilly, who is just one back of Miller, had 15 holes of par or better. The sophomore had a birdie on hole six, which was a 581-yard par-5 that doglegged around a celery bog hazard to the right. Lilly had back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th to break back to even. After a bogey on 14, he birdied 16, a 554-yard par-5. At 1-over for the day, Lilly sits in a tie for seventh, just three shots back of the leader.
Burke Pitz is tied for 18th after 18 holes, as he carded a 76 in his opening round. He had a birdie on both the front and back nines, coming on holes seven and 10. He drained a tough putt on seven and another lengthy one on 10. He had 10 pars to go with his two birdies.
Jacob Deakyne completed the team score with an 83. He is in a tie for 42nd. The sophomore had a birdie on 16 and turned in nine pars. His brother Parker Deakyne was two shots back at 85. He also birdied 16 with a four. Parker had six pars.
The Mastodons shot 304 as a team to finish in fourth, just one back of Robert Morris. Oakland is leading the team scores with a 288.
Purdue Fort Wayne will continue its hunt for a Horizon League Championship on Monday, April 26 with an 8:15 a.m. tee time.
