
Mastodons Kick Off 2021 Season With Exhibition Match Against Indiana State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team kicks off its 2021 campaign with an exhibition match on Sunday, Aug. 8 (5 p.m.) at the Hefner Soccer Complex against the Indiana State Sycamores.

Scouting The Mastodons
The 'Dons finished the 2020-21 campaign with a 3-5-1 overall record and a 2-5-1 record in the Horizon League. One of the top returners for the Mastodons is sophomore forward Rylee Vruggink, who led the team in points (9), assists (3), shots (22) and shots on goal (17). She was also tied for the team lead in goals (3) and was a Horizon League All-Freshman team honoree. Another top returner is redshirt-junior defender Gabrielle Fanning, who started eight games, was tied for second on the team in assists (2) and was a Second Team All-Horizon League honoree. Head coach Jason Burr enters his eighth season with the Mastodons.
Scouting the Sycamores
Indiana State finished the 2020-21 season with a 6-4 overall record and a 6-2 record in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Sycamores return three of its top offensive threats in CeCe Wahlberg, Audrey Stephens and Katie Yankey. The three combined for six goals. Wahlberg was a first team All-MVC honoree while Stephens and Yankey received All-Freshman team honors. Julie Hanley enters her sixth season as the Sycamores head coach.
