Second Half Comeback Results In A 2-2 Tie Against Chicago State

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – After scoring two goals in the final 20 minutes of the second half, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team finished non-league play with a 2-2 tie against Chicago State on Friday, Sept. 10.
The Mastodons will head into Horizon League play with a 1-2-4 record overall. This is the first time the Mastodons have entered conference play with two losses or less in program history.
Chicago State got on the board with an early first half goal in the games fourth minute scored by Sara Quevedo. The Cougars would continue to put the pressure on the 'Dons with a goal from Julia Oliveira in the games 54th minute. The Mastodons would get on the board in the 72nd minute with a goal from Mackenzie Evans. Evans now leads the team in goals with two. With the energy and momentum on their side, the Mastodons would tie the game in the 82nd minute with a goal from Kelsey Gallagher. The goal would come off a free kick just outside the goalie box, Gallagher was able to sneak the ball past the goalkeeper to the top left corner of the net. The 'Dons would keep up the pressure in overtime, putting up four shots to Chicago State's zero, but was unable to find the back of the net.
The Mastodons had an 18-10 shot advantage on the day, including 17 shots in the second half and overtime periods. Of the 18 shots, six were on goal for the 'Dons while the seven of the Cougars 10 shots were on goal. Morgan Reitano led the 'Dons in shots with three. Alexandra Ibarra, Gallagher, Zoe Greenhalge, and Lizzie Haub each added two shots. Samantha Castaneda started in goal for the Mastodons. In 110 minutes in net, she racked up five saves and allowed two goals.
The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 16 (6 p.m.) against UIC for its Horizon League opener. Thursday's game will also be the second annual Party at the Pitch.
