Mastodons Celebrate Party At The Pitch With a 2-0 Win Over UIC
9/16/2021 9:28:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – At its second annual Party at the Pitch celebration, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team opened Horizon League play with a 2-0 victory over UIC on Thursday, Sept. 16 at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The win improves the Mastodons' record to 2-2-4 (1-0-0 Horizon League) on the season, and they're now 2-0 in Horizon League home openers under head coach Jason Burr.
The contest was played in front of a festive crowd of more than 600 as part of the second annual Party at the Pitch featuring food trucks, music and a soccer clinic for kids prior to the game.
After a close first half, the Mastodons would get on the board with a goal at the 60th minute from Morgan Reitano. Rylee Vruggink set up the goal with a cross from the left side of the field, Reitano was able to gain possession of the ball off a deflection, and put the ball past the goalie. The goal would be Reitano's second of the season, and the assist was Vruggink's first of the season. Megan Sinnott would ice the game with a goal in the games 71st minute. Sinnott weaved her way through multiple UIC defenders to create space and put the ball in the top right corner of the net. The goal was also Sinnott's second goal of the season. Over the last two games, the 'Dons have scored four second half goals.
The 'Dons out-shot the Flames 13-7 on the day, including a 9-2 shot advantage in the second half. Of those 13 shots, eight were on goal while two of the Flames' seven shots were on goal. In net for the 'Dons was Samantha Castaneda. She saved two shots and earned her third shutout of the season. Heading into the game, the Homestead High School graduate was tied for second in the Horizon League in shutouts.
UIC falls to 0-6-1 (0-1-0 Horizon League) with the loss.
The Mastodons will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 19 (1 p.m.) as they travel to Indianapolis, Ind. for a Horizon League game against IUPUI.
