Mastodons Drop a Pair to Top-25 Tennessee and Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to No. 22 Tennessee and No. 9 Purdue in the Stacey Clark Classic.
GAME 1: No. 22 Tennessee 3, Purdue Fort Wayne 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-19)
The Mastodons jumped out to an early lead over the Volunteers in the opening set with a 3-0 run to go up 9-5. The Vols had a service error and an attack error before Ramei Jackson got a solo block. Tennessee had a 5-0 run that gave the Volunteers a 19-15 lead that they would nurse the rest of the set.
Katie Crowe saw two aces in a row fall onto Tennessee's side of the court in the second set to give the 'Dons an early lead. The two squads traded points until the top 25 team led 21-19. Then the Vols finished the set on a 4-1 run.
Crowe had another ace in a 5-1 stretch for the 'Dons in the third set, but this only cut the Tennessee lead to two. The two teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the set, but the Volunteers got the last three points of the set.
Crowe led the team with 10 kills and four aces. Rachael Crucis had 12 digs. Tennessee improved to 7-1 after hitting .301 in the match.
GAME 2: No. 9 Purdue 3, Purdue Fort Wayne 0 (25-19, 25-6, 25-12)
Purdue Fort Wayne had 6-1 run midway through the opening set against the top 10 Boilermakers that silenced the home crowd of 2,317. Molly Mirabelli got a kill to start things off, then combined with Madelyn Wurster for a block. Viviana Lefherz got a kill, the Wurster and Jackson blcoked the Boilers before a final kill from Wurster. This brought the 'Dons with within two at 18-16, but Purdue rattled off seven of the final eight points.
In set two, Purdue went on a 14-0 run to start the set that put the 'Dons out of the frame. In the third, the 'Dons started off with a 3-0 run before Purdue went on an 8-1 run. Momentum shifted entirely to the home squad, as the Boilermakers took six of the last seven points of the match.
Crucis had eight digs to lead the Mastodons' back line.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 2-10, while No. 9 Purdue improves to 7-1. The 'Dons conclude the Stacey Clark Classic with a match against Jacksonville State at 10 a.m. on Saturday (Sept. 18).
