Non-League Play Concludes for Mastodon WVB With 3-1 Loss to Jacksonville State

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team fell to Jacksonville State 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-15, 25-16) in the two teams' final game of the Stacey Clark Classic on Saturday (Sept. 18).
Maggie Castleman was named to the All-Tournament team on Saturday. For the weekend, she averaged 2.30 kills per set with a .268 hitting percentage and 1.60 digs per set. Against Jacksonville State, she registered nine terminations with a .350 clip.
Purdue Fort Wayne jumped out to an 8-3 lead on the Gamecocks in set one. The opening run of the match featured aces from Rachael Crucis and Madison Gates and kills from Ramei Jackson and Molly Mirabelli. Jacksonville State used a pair of 6-0 runs to go up 18-11. The 'Dons cut the lead to three with back-to-back kills from Gates and Jackson, but the Gamecocks scored the last three points of the set.
The Mastodons looked their best in the second set, as they hit .341 as a team. Katie Crowe was the catalyst for the 'Dons' offensive attack; she had seven kills on 15 swings. Castleman and Jackson both had four kills without an error in the second set. After a 6-4 lead for the Gamecocks, Purdue Fort Wayne rattled off an 8-1 run that saw Crowe hammer down two kills. Viviana Lefherz and Crucis had an ace each in this run. Jacksonville State cut the lead to one, but the 'Dons built the lead back up to five after three kills from Jackson, Madelyn Wurster and Crowe. Wurster finished off the set with one of her five kills.
The 'Dons and Gamecocks were even through 24 points in the third set with 12 each, but Jacksonville State ran away with the set thanks to a 13-3 closing run. JSU started the fourth set with a 13-4 lead that it would nurse for the rest of the match. Later on, the 'Dons had a 5-0 stretch in which Jackson got a kill and Crowe got two.
Crowe led the way with 13 kills, while Jackson had 11. Crucis had 13 digs, while Gates recorded a double-double with 32 assists and 15 digs. Jacksonville State hit .343, led by Lena Kindermann, who had 20 kills on 27 attempts.
The Mastodons fall to 2-11, while Jacksonville State improves to 10-3. Non-league play is over for Purdue Fort Wayne. Horizon League play opens on Thursday, September 23 when the Green Bay Phoenix visit the Gates Sports Center for a 6 p.m. match.
