Horizon League Play Begins For Mastodon WVB This Week

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team will open Horizon League action this week with three matches in the Gates Sports Center.

Know Your Foes
• Green Bay is 5-7 on the year, coming off a 3-0 loss to No. 2 Wisconsin. The Phoenix have wins over St. Thomas, Texas Southern, Abilene Christian, North Dakota and Northern Illinois. Green Bay is led by Alexandra Zakutney, who was second in the Horizon League in kills last season behind Katie Crowe. She is averaging 3.86 kills per set this season. Calli Gentry is dishing out a league-high 10.23 assists per set. Tiffany Paalman is leading the Horizon League with 50 blocks.
• Milwaukee is 6-6 heading into Horizon League play, with wins over Cincinnati, (RV) Notre Dame, Bradley, Central Arkansas, Butler and Western Michigan. The Panthers are coming off a 3-1 loss to No. 19 UCLA. Middle blocker Ari Miller is leading the team at 3.59 kills per set while freshman outside hitter Madi Malone is getting the job done on the left side with 3.04 kills per set. Miller is hitting a league-high .367.
• UIC was 4-8 in its non-league schedule, with wins over Bowling Green, Ohio, Belmont and Chicago State. The Flames lost to common foe Indiana in three sets. UIC is coming off three straight losses to Northwestern, Loyola Chicago and DePaul, and will face IUPUI before coming to Fort Wayne. Martina Delucchi and Paola Santiago are both averaging over three kills per set. Jaclyn Oblena and Delucchi are digging out more than three attacks per set.

Rachael Crucis is the newest member of the Purdue Fort Wayne 1,000-dig club. On September 14, in the Mastodons' first set against Toledo, Crucis recorded the five digs necessary to reach the 1,000-dig plateau.
What a Classic!
After her performance at the Stacey Clark Classic, Maggie Castleman was named to the All-Tournament Team. She registered 2.30 kills per set with a .268 hitting percentage and 1.60 digs per set from the right side. Against Jacksonville State, she recorded nine kills with a .350 hitting clip. This was the first All-Tournament designation of Castleman's career.
Saturday Night Five
The Mastodons have already played three five-set matches this season (SIUE, Kent State and Liberty). This is more than the entirety of the spring 2021 season, as the 'Dons had just one: a 3-2 loss at Green Bay.
Fort Wayne 5-Oh!
Katie Crowe has five double-doubles this season, with 50 total in her career. She had three consecutive against SIUE (17k, 10d), Evansville (12k, 11d) and Kent State (13k, 12d). She then got back to her double-double ways with one at Western Michigan with 15 kills and 12 digs. She recorded her 50th double-double against Old Dominion with 21 kills and 10 digs.
