Know Your Foes
• Navy is 3-3 on the season, but is riding a three-match losing streak coming into the Liberty tournament. The Mids hosted their home tournament last week with Michigan and West Virginia in attendance. Navy dropped both, but did take a set off the Wolverines. Avery Stowell and Jamie Llewellyn are leading the Mids, averaging 2.59 and 2.45 kills per set, respectively.
• Liberty is 3-0 after winning Robert Morris' tournament last week, picking up wins over the Colonials, Duquesne and Idaho. The Flames are led by Trinity Watts, who has 52 kills for a 4.00 per set average. Amaya Williams is pacing the offense with 10.38 assists per set, leading the team to a .241 hitting percentage. Liberty will play four matches in their tournament: Old Dominion, Navy, Purdue Fort Wayne and Loyola Marymount.
• The Old Dominion Monarchs are 2-4, having gone 1-2 in both tournaments in which they have competed. ODU beat Hampton and Appalachian State, both four-set affairs. Madelyn Grunza is leading the Monarchs with 2.40 kills per set and a .292 hitting clip.
Fresh Digs
The 'Dons will be playing in Liberty Arena, which was constructed in December of 2020. It seats 4,000. There were seven women's volleyball matches played in the facility in the spring of 2021.
A Long Road Ahead
The drive from Purdue Fort Wayne to Liberty is 544 miles, the longest of any other teams in Liberty's tournament. Navy's trip is just 220 miles and Old Dominion's is even shorter at 190 miles.
Saturday Night Five
The Mastodons have already played two five-set matches this season (SIUE and Kent State). This is more than the entirety of the spring 2021 season, as the 'Dons had just one: a 3-2 loss at Green Bay.
Make It A Double
Katie Crowe has four double-doubles in three matches this season. She had three consecutive against SIUE (17k, 10d), Evansville (12k, 11d) and Kent State (13k, 12d). She then got back to her double-double ways with one at Western Michigan with 15 kills and 12 digs. She now has 49 double-doubles in her career in her five seasons.
Let's Take a Michi-Gander at that Game
The Mastodons picked up their first win of the season at Western Michigan on September 4. The Broncos won the Discover Kalamazoo Classic, but the 'Dons were the only team to beat them in the weekend. Katie Crowe led the 'Dons with 15 kills and 12 digs, while Ramei Jackson had 13 kills with a .550 hitting clip. Rachael Crucis dug out 19 attacks, while both Madison Gates and Nicole Jones recorded double-doubles.
Last Time Out
The Mastodons went 1-2 at the Discover Kalamazoo Classic last week, but finished the tournament on a high note with a 3-1 win over Western Michigan. WMU won the tournament, but the Mastodon offense was clicking, hitting .297 for the match against the Broncos. Katie Crowe was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Coming Up
Purdue Fort Wayne has its only mid-week non-league contest of the season: a Tuesday match against Toledo on September 14 at 7 p.m. in the Gates Sports Center.
