Bromenschenkel and Stupp Notch Career-Highs in Loss
1/22/2022 5:03:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Amellia Bromenschenkel scored a career-high 14 points and Aubrey Stupp grabbed a personal-best nine boards in Purdue Fort Wayne's 80-58 loss to the Cleveland State women's basketball team on Saturday (Jan. 22).
Bromenschenkel's career-best of 14 points came by way of 5-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range. She finished making five of her last six shots. Stupp nearly completed her first double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Mastodons jumped out to a 6-2 lead early on behind a banked in 3-pointer from Shianne Johnson and a triple from Sylare Starks. The Vikings rebounded from there, taking a lead before the end of the first quarter that the 'Dons would never regain.
Late in the third, Starks hit a 3-pointer before Stupp took a charge to cap off a 6-0 run to cut the Vikings' lead to six at 46-40. This was as close as the Mastodons would be for the remainder of the contest, as the Vikings had a 7-0 run toward the end of the third quarter that trickled into the fourth. The CSU lead ballooned to its final line behind a 29-18 final frame.
Shayla Sellers, who was running point guard duties in Riley Ott's absence, had just one turnover in 38 minutes of action.
The Mastodons made eight 3-pointers, while holding the Vikings to just five. The 'Dons forced CSU into 21 turnovers, the Vikings' third-most this season.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 5-13, 4-7 in the Horizon League. Cleveland State improves 12-3, 7-2 Horizon. The Mastodons will head to Indianapolis on Thursday (Jan. 27) to face preseason league favorite IUPUI and three-time Player of the Year Macee Williams.
