FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne never trailed in an 82-71 victory over Youngstown State on Sunday (Jan. 23) afternoon at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Horizon League play.
The Mastodons opened the game with a 13-0 lead thanks to a 5-of-6 start from the floor. Youngstown State cut it to three points later in the first before a Jarred Godfrey 3-pointer just inside the first half buzzer made it a 32-25 score.
The Penguins tied it at 32 by scoring the first seven points of the second half. It was the first of only two ties in the contest. The second tie came at 59 with 6:52 remaining. Each time the Penguins crept closer, the 'Dons had an answer. This time it was 3-pointers to go up 65-59 by Damian Chong Qui and Deonte Billups. Youngstown State asked for time and Billups earned a block on the ensuing possession. Ra Kpedi scored two of his eight points just a few seconds later to put the 'Dons up by eight.
The 'Dons made 9-of-10 free throws in the second half to put the game away down the stretch.
Purdue Fort Wayne earned the win despite Youngstown State shooting 57.1 percent (28-of-49) from the floor with 12 3-pointers. In the end the Penguins just didn't have enough shots, as the Mastodons forced 17 turnovers. The 'Dons committed just eight turnovers and shot 53.4 percent (31-of-58). Purdue Fort Wayne finished with 29 points off turnovers and 20 fast break points.
