'Dons Fall To Highlanders In Straight Sets

NEWARK, N.J. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-16, 25-19, 26-24) to NJIT on Sunday, Jan. 23
After dropping the first set, the 'Dons would find themselves up 9-6 to start the second set. During that stretch, Jon Diedrich had three kills, Carlos Mercado added two kills and Bryce Walker hit his seventh service ace of the season. That mark is tied for best on the team with Diedrich.
The Highlanders responded with an 8-2 run to lead the set 14-11 and finished the set scoring three of the last four points.
The 'Dons would not go down without a fight. In the third set, neither team led by more than three points. However, with the set tied at 24, the Highlanders recorded back-to-back kills to close the set and win the match.
As a team, the 'Dons hit .202 for the match, including a .419 hit percentage in the third set. NJIT hit for .456 for the match, which includes a .591 hit percentage in the second set.
Jon Diedrich led the 'Dons in kills with 15 and hit .202 for the match. Zach Solomon and Sean Califf split time at setter. Solomon led the 'Dons in assists with 13, Califf added nine. Troy Gooch led in digs with four.
With the loss, the 'Dons overall record is 3-3. NJIT picked up its first win of the season after dropping its first two matches to Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foes Loyola Chicago and Lewis.
The 'Dons will be back in action next weekend with two home matches on the Arnie Ball Court at the Gates Sports Center. They will take on Saint Francis (PA) on Friday, Jan. 28 (7 p.m.) and again on Saturday, Jan. 29 (3 p.m.). Friday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ while Saturday's game will be streamed to YouTube.
