'Dons Stay Undefeated in League, Pick up Crucial Draw With Milwaukee

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team stayed undefeated in Horizon League action on Saturday (Oct. 1), picking up an important draw with Milwaukee at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
Purdue Fort Wayne continues its best season in program history by earning its first-ever result against the Panthers. After two one-goal contests the last two seasons, including an overtime game in 2021, the Mastodons got a 0-0 tie against Milwaukee in 2022.
Milwaukee maintained possession for the majority of the contest, out-shooting the Mastodons 16-2. Samantha Castaneda earned every bit of the clean sheet, recording six saves for the 'Dons.
The Mastodons' only shot on goal came in minute 37 when Mackenzie Evans kicked a roller toward the Milwaukee keeper that was picked up before sneaking past into the net. Gigi Ricciardi had a chance late in the first half as well on a set piece from Kelsey Gallagher, but just missed the header that could have been the game-winner.
The second half was dominated by the Panthers, as they had six shots while keeping the Mastodons from doing so. The Mastodon defense did its part though, keeping Milwaukee from pressuring Castaneda too much. She made all three saves in the second half with relative ease.
Castaneda's five shutouts this season ties a program record. She needs just one more to tie the career record of 10. The team's goals against average of 0.83 this season is a program record by a significant margin.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 6-2-4, 2-0-2 in Horizon League action. The Mastodons are also still unbeaten at the Hefner Soccer Complex this season. They are 4-0-3 at home.
The Mastodons are one of just two unbeaten teams in League play. The Wright State Raiders, who play at 7 p.m. ET, are 3-0-1. Milwaukee moves to 2-1-2, one spot behind the Mastodons in the standings. Purdue Fort Wayne will return to the pitch on Thursday (Oct. 6) when the Northern Kentucky Norse visit Hefner. That match will kick off at 7 p.m.
