Happy Night at Hefner: 'Dons Top Northern Kentucky 1-0

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind a goal in minute 61 from Gigi Ricciardi, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team defeated Northern Kentucky 1-0 at the Hefner Soccer Complex on Thursday (Oct. 6).
Purdue Fort Wayne is now 7-2-4 and an undefeated 3-0-2 Horizon League action. The Mastodons are now the only team in the league without a league loss. They have shut out six opponents this season, which sets a new program record.
The Mastodons are also unbeaten at home, sporting a 5-0-3 record at the Hefner Soccer Complex with just one match left at home.
In minute 31, it looked as though Ricciardi had broken the tie before the halftime break. She headed in a ball that was bobbled by the NKU keeper, but she was called offside late. Her scoring chance would have to wait until the second half.
Exactly a half-hour of game time later, Ricciardi went low to head a through ball from Morgan Reitano past the keeper and score the game-winning goal. It was Ricciardi's third goal and Reitano's second assist of the year.
Samantha Castaneda got credited with her sixth shutout of the year, becoming the keeper with the most in one season in program history. She has also tied the career record with 10. It took Castaneda five saves in 10 shots faced to pick up the clean sheet. Defenders Lizzie Haub, Gabrielle Fanning and Isabelle Wissel were instrumental as well, playing all 90 minutes.
The Mastodons out-shot NKU 15-10. Zoe Greenhalge had a game-high five shots with two on-target.
The good news continued away from the Hefner Soccer Complex when Detroit Mercy topped league-leading Wright State. It put the Raiders into a tie with the Mastodons for second place in the league with 11 points. the 'Dons only trail Detroit Mercy with 12, but the Titans have played one more game than the 'Dons.
Northern Kentucky falls to 1-7-2, 1-3-1. The Mastodons will take their 7-2-4 record to Wright State on Sunday (Oct. 9) for a 1 p.m. kick.
