‘Dons Use Long Ball Early to Take Down Chicago State
11/17/2022 9:52:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne's women's basketball knocked down a season-high 13 3-pointers en route to a blowout 86-52 win over the visiting Chicago State Cougars on Thursday (Nov. 17).
The Mastodons' 34-point margin of victory was their largest against a Division I foe since an 89-43 victory over Centenary on January 31, 2011.
Junior Amellia Bromenschenkel continued her torrid start to the season, leading the Mastodons with 21 points to the tune of 9-of-14 shooting from the floor and 3-of 6 shooting from downtown. Bromenschenkel added a season-high eight rebounds. She is the first Mastodon to average 20 points per game or better over the first four games in a season since Stephanie Rosado did to start 2010-11.
Defensively, Purdue Fort Wayne forced the Cougars into 27 turnovers, marking the second consecutive game that the Mastodon's have forced 25-plus turnovers. This is the first season since 2006-07, and just the third time since moving Division I, that Purdue Fort Wayne has forced three different opponents into 27 or more turnovers, and it only took the Mastodons four games to do it.
Purdue Fort Wayne was able to convert those 27 Cougar turnovers into 34 points. The Mastodons also limited Chicago State to just 38.8 percent shooting from the field (19-of-49).
After the Cougars took a brief 13-12 lead with under three minutes to play in the opening period, the Mastodons used a flurry of triples during a decisive 21-4 run that blew the game open. Purdue Fort Wayne hit 10 of its 13 3-pointers in the first half and led 47-28 at the intermission.
Seven different players made a 3-pointer in Thursday night's win, while five different players made multiple triples. Shayla Sellers and Riley Ott joined Bromenschenkel in double figures, scoring 12 and 10 points apiece. As a team, the 'Dons were 19-of-21 from the free throw line.
With Thursday's victory, Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 3-1 while Chicago State drops to 0-4. The Mastodons will return to action on Monday (Nov. 21) against the Norfolk State Spartans in the first of three games at the Hostilo Community Classic in Savannah, Georgia. The 'Dons will also play Marshall (Nov. 22) and UT Martin (Nov. 23) while in Georgia.
