Northern Kentucky Takes Horizon League Match From Mastodons

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Purdue Fort Wayne dropped a Horizon League women's volleyball contest at Northern Kentucky on Friday night (Nov. 4) 25-21, 25-17, 28-30, 25-19.
The Mastodons had a 3-0 run midway through the first set with a kill from Molly Mirabelli and an ace from Sidney Schiller, but NKU finished the frame on a 7-1 run to go up 1-0.
The Norse went up 15-9 to start set two. The 'Dons had a small push late with a 5-2 stretch that featured a kill and block from Mirabelli, a kill from Schiller and an ace from Taya Haffner. NKU took the final three points of the set to take a two-set advantage.
The two teams were tied at 19 in set three, then NKU went up 24-21. The Mastodons held off four set points before extending the set. Eventually, Madelyn Wurster had back-to-back kills then Ramei Jackson had a solo block to take the set 30-28.
After a Mastodon timeout, the 'Dons had a 3-0 push behind the service of Rachael Crucis to force NKU into a timeout of its own. Another 3-0 stretch brought the 'Dons within one thanks to a kill and block from Wurster. A 6-1 NKU run after this, however, put the set out of reach.
The Mastodon kills were spread around the lineup. Iris Riegel had a match-high 17, while Mirabelli and Wurster had 12 kills each. Jackson had nine with a .412 hitting clip. LonDynn Betts earned the start at libero for the first time this season and recorded a match-high 19 digs. Haffner had a double-double with 47 assists and 10 digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 8-18, 4-11 Horizon League. The Norse improve to 14-12, 12-3. The Mastodons will take on Wright State on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 5). The Raiders are 15-0 in league action and have clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Championship.
