Mastodons Drop League Opener to Titans 75-66

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Jarred Godfrey recorded 20 points and nine rebounds but it came in a losing effort as the Detroit Mercy Titans defeated Purdue Fort Wayne 75-66 in Horizon League play on Thursday (Dec. 1) evening at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
Detroit Mercy's Antoine Davis made history in the contest by becoming the Horizon League's leader in career points. He now has 2,919 points, passing Loyola Chicago's Alfredrick Hughes' (1981-85) previous record of 2,914.
Davis needed 24 shots to get his 22 points on the night. He scored nine points over the final 3:04, including the shot that put the Titans up for good at 60-58 with 3:04 left. His next three put the Titans up 63-58 and set the new league mark.
The 'Dons used a 19-5 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half to erase a 14-point deficit. Damian Chong Qui went coast-to-coast for a layup to tie the game at 45. Another Chong Qui basket put the 'Dons up for the first time at 49-47.
Bobby Planutis totaled a season-high 18 points. Both Godfrey (24-of-24) and Planutis (18-of-18) are still perfect from the free throw line this season.
Both teams recorded 14 offensive boards in the game. The 'Dons shot 38.7 percent (24-of-62). The Titans finished at 34.3 percent (24-of-70).
Prior to the contest the Mastodons unveiled the 2021-22 Horizon League regular season title banner.
 
The 'Dons are back in action on Saturday (Dec. 3) against Oakland. The game will be at 3 p.m. at the Gates Sports Center, live on ESPNU. It will be the first ever home broadcast of an ESPN network contest.
Both squads are now 4-4. It was the first Horizon League contest for both schools.
