12/31/2022 1:51:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Stephens took over the game as soon as she entered late in the third quarter. She hit her first five shots, leading a 12-2 charge with 10 points coming by her own hand. She hit a pair of triples, which is a career-best. Her 14 points came in just 11 minutes.
Stephens led the Mastodon bench that out-scored YSU's bench 28-13. The 'Dons got seven from Sylare Starks, three from Lauryn Stover, and two from Audra Emmerson and Sydney Graber.
The bench's push came too late to close the gap that Youngstown State had built up, as the Penguins led by as many as 22 before Stephens entered.
YSU's Malia Magestro was 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in the first half, but the 'Dons held her to 0-of-3 in the second. She was scoreless for the final 19:10 of the game. Player of the Year candidate Lilly Ritz led Youngstown State with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
The Mastodons forced the Penguins into 25 turnovers, the most by YSU this season against any team not named Penn State. The 'Dons turned the 25 turnovers into 20 points.
The 'Dons move to .500 in Horizon League play, falling to 5-9, 2-2. YSU move into second place in the league standings, improving to 8-4, 3-1. The Mastodons will return home to continue league play in the New Year. They will welcome in-state rival IUPUI to the Gates Sports Center on Wednesday, January 4. IUPUI plays host to Wright State on New Year's Day before coming to Fort Wayne.
