Mastodons Stay Tough to Beat at Home in Win Over UIC
2/12/2022 10:14:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne erased an early double-digit deficit to defeat UIC 73-66 in front of a vocal Homecoming crowd at the Gates Sports Center on Saturday (Feb. 12).
The Mastodons are now 12-2 at home this season. It is the most home wins for the 'Dons since the 2017-18 team finished 13-3 in the Summit City.
UIC couldn't have asked for a better start to the game, opening up an 11-0 lead thanks to three 3-pointers. From there on, however, the Mastodons went to work. The key stretch was a 9-0 run that gave the 'Dons their first lead of the game at 25-24 with 5:24 left in the first half. Four different 'Dons scored in the stretch.
The Flames kept it close throughout but never held a lead in the game's final 14 minutes. The 'Dons took their largest lead of the game at 59-50 with 10:08 left. UIC rallied back and made it a one-point game with 1:45 remaining. The Flames had a chance to go up with just over a minute left but after a Damaria Franklin missed 3-pointer, Damian Chong Qui was fouled going for a rebound. He converted a pair of free throws to put the 'Dons up 69-66. UIC committed an offensive foul on the other end and then Jarred Godfrey finished at the hoop in traffic to give the Mastodons a two-possession lead at 71-66 with 38 seconds left. It iced the contest for the 'Dons.
Chong Qui put together perhaps his best game as a Mastodon, totaling 20 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. In a three-consecutive possession span in the second half he made a nice move to nail a mid-range jumper, forced UIC into an offensive foul and then connected on a 3-pointer.
Godfrey had 17 points with six rebounds and a team-five assists.
As a team the Mastodons forced 19 turnovers on 10 steals.
The 'Dons shot 47.5 percent (28-of-59). UIC finished at 41.4 percent (24-of-58).
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 15-10 (10-6 Horizon). UIC falls to 9-14 (5-9 Horizon). The 'Dons are back in action on Monday (Feb. 14) in a Senior Night contest against Cleveland State. It will be a 7 p.m. tip at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
