Mastodons Earn 2022 Horizon League Regular Season Title

DETROIT – 2022 Horizon League Regular Season Champions. That has a ring to it. Purdue Fort Wayne defeated Detroit Mercy 81-78 in the regular season finale on Saturday (Feb. 26) and combined with a Cleveland State loss to Oakland, the 'Dons earned a share of the 2022 regular season title with Cleveland State
The win on Saturday was the Mastodons' ninth straight victory and their 20th win of the season. Purdue Fort Wayne will enter the 2022 Keeps Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship with the No. 2 seed. The Mastodons will host a quarterfinal contest on Thursday (March 3) in a 7 p.m. start at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Tickets go on sale on Monday at 10 a.m.
The 'Dons had a great finish to the day and a great start. They shot a blistering 75.0 percent in the first half (18-of-24) and 6-of-9 from three. Jarred Godfrey had 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals in the first half alone.
While the 'Dons never trailed in the game, a hard charging Detroit Mercy team didn't make it easy in the second half. The Titans cut the deficit to one at 64-63 with 8:06 left. Deonte Billups responded with a 3-pointer on the next possession. It was the first of four times the Titans made it a one-point game before Detroit Mercy tied it at 71 with 4:50 remaining. Ra Kpedi put the 'Dons back up with a layup and then Billups completed a four-point play to give the 'Dons the lead at 77-71 with 3:17 left.
The win snapped Detroit Mercy's 15-game home win streak dating back to last season.
Billups had several key baskets in the second half and finished with 16 of his 18 points in the final frame.
Godfrey added 16. Jalon Pipkins totaled 12 points, Bobby Planutis had 11 and Ra Kpedi finished with 10 points and six boards.
The 'Dons finished the game shooting 58.0 (29-of-50) and 50.0 percent from three (11-of-22).
Detroit Mercy shot 49.0 percent (25-of-51). Antoine Davis had a game-high 26 points on his Senior Day.
The 'Dons improve to 20-10 (15-6 Horizon). Detroit Mercy falls to 13-14 (10-7 Horizon).
Purdue Fort Wayne won't know their opponent on Thursday until after Tuesday's opening around.
