JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. - For the first time since 2016, the Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team is bringing home a team trophy. The Mastodons dominated the Benbow Invitational on Tuesday (March 8), claiming the team title with a team score of 293-282-575. Kasey Lilly was the tournament medalist, winning his second individual medal of the 2021-22 season. He fired a 72-68-140, beating everyone else in the field by at least four shots.
The Mastodons finished 16 strokes ahead of host Butler to win the Bulldogs' event. This is Purdue Fort Wayne's fourth tournament win as a team in program history. Lilly's medalist honor on Tuesday is the seventh time that a Mastodon has won a tournament. Lilly is the owner of two wins, trailing just Zach Schroeder, who won three from 2016-19.
Lilly had a final round of 68, turning in a bogey-free scorecard. Lilly got birdies to fall on holes two, eight and 18.
Hunter Mefford recorded a 72-73-145 to tie for fourth place. This is the best finish of his career, and his first top-10. His 2-over round featured birdies coming on holes two, four and six to pair with 10 pars.
After an opening round of 71, Tyler Green carded a 75 for a two-day total of 146. He finished in a tie for sixth. The graduate transfer had four birdies in his final round. He started his day with three of those birdies in the first four holes.
Luke Miller had his fifth-career round of par or better turning in 78-70-148. The senior had a bogey-free front nine, then used birdies on 13 and 18 to tie for 10th. This is the first time he has finished in the top-10.
Brett Seward had his score taken in round two: an even 71. He had five birdies, four of which coming on the front nine. He finished with a 78-71-149 to take 14th.
