CHICAGO – For the first time since 2007 the Mastodons will play for the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association title. The sixth-seeded 'Dons earned the trip to Saturday's MIVA championship match after sweeping second-seeded Loyola 32-30, 25-23, 27-25 on Wednesday (April 20) evening at Gentile Arena.
Purdue Fort Wayne will travel to Muncie, Ind. to take on No. 1 seed Ball State in the MIVA Finals.
Freshman Zach Solomon had 50 assists, the most assists by a setter in the NCAA this season in a three-set match. It is only seven shy of the NCAA record for assists in a three-set match.
He guided a Mastodon offense which hit .388. Jon Diedrich (16), Rico Wardlow (15) and Vicente Ibarra (12) each finished with double digit kills. Wardlow had the Mastodons' best hitting percentage of the night at .625. Diedrich hit .387 with Ibarra at 321.
Kade Bontrager led the 'Dons in digs with 13. He's notched double-digit digs in each of the last three matches and is averaging 3.82 digs per set in this stretch. He also added nine kills and hit .333 on Wednesday.
Despite the Ramblers' 3-0 lead to start the first set, the 'Dons bounced back early and eventually took a 6-5 edge. Bontrager had two kills, Cody Johnson and Wardlow added kills during the run. From then on, neither team held a lead larger than two points for the next 48 serves. With the Ramblers up 30-29, the 'Dons rallied off three points to secure the set win. Wardlow had two kills in the three-point stretch.
The Ramblers once again had an early lead in the second set at 4-0. The 'Dons fought their way back and eventually tied the set at 22-22. With the score tied, the 'Dons scored three of the next four points to win the set. The set was won off a Diedrich and Wardlow block.
Heading into the media timeout, the Ramblers led the third set 15-12. The 'Dons responded with a 4-1 run to tie the set at 16-16. Wardlow and Diedrich each had two kills. With the set tied at 25-25, the 'Dons scored the final two points off kills from Bontrager and Ibarra to win the match.
