4/23/2022 8:59:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne's Cinderella run in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament came to an end on Saturday (April 23) evening. The Mastodons fell to Ball State 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-16) in the MIVA Championship match at Worthen Arena.
As the No. 6 seed, the 'Dons were looking to become the lowest seed to ever win the MIVA title. It was the Mastodons' first trip to the championship match since 2007. Top seed Ball State will advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Zach Solomon and Kade Bontrager were named to the All-MIVA Tournament Team for their play over the three postseason matches. Solomon averaged 12.70 assists per set. Bontrager averaged 4.40 digs per set.
The 'Dons turned away four set points in the opening frame before the Cardinals' Angelos Mandilaris tooled the block for point 28 to end the set. The Cardinals used a 6-1 run to go up 20-17. But the 'Dons tied it 21 with a three-point push. Point 21 was the longest rally of the match, and it went the Mastodons' way on a Rico Wardlow kill.
The 'Dons went to the media timeout leading 15-12 in the second set, but Ball State responded with a 11-2 run. The stretch gave the Cardinals the lead for good and put them a set away from the title.
The third frame turned on a 4-0 Cardinal push to go up 18-13. The 'Dons called timeout but three more Cardinal points followed.
Jon Diedrich had a team-high 10 kills for the 'Dons. Solomon finished with 32 assists. A pair of Mastodons reached double-digit digs. Bontrager had a match-high 12. Troy Gooch added 11 digs.
Ball State out-hit Purdue Fort Wayne .308 to .232 and held a 5-0 edge in aces. Tournament MVP Kaleb Jenness had a match-high 18 kills for the Cardinals.
The 'Dons conclude the season 17-13. They entered the match No. 15 in the nation. Ball State, ranked No. 7 in the nation, is now 23-3.
