Brett Seward Leads 'Dons on Day One of Horizon League Championship

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Brett Seward of the Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team shot an opening round 73 to lead the Mastodons on the first day of the Horizon League Championship.
Seward's first round of the week was highlighted by three birdies, which came on holes one, 10 and 13. He started on hole 10 with a birdie on the 530-yard par-5, then used a birdie on the 340-yard 13th to pave his way to a 1-under back nine. He birdied the 474-yard first after making the turn. He had 11 pars to go with his three birdies. He is in 12th with 36 to play.
Kasey Lilly had a bogey-free back nine, starting his day with four pars, a birdie, then four more pars. He birdied nine and 14 en route to a 75. He is tied for 20th.
Hunter Mefford also started his round with a birdie on 10, then matched Lilly with birdie on 14. Mefford finished with a 76 to sit in a tie for 25th.
Burke Pitz turned in a 78 in the first round to place 33rd. He dropped in 10 pars with a birdie on the 360-yard 16th. Tyler Green shot an 80 to tie for 40th. His round was highlighted by birdies on five and 14, and eight pars.
As a team, the Mastodons shot 302. They are in sole possession of sixth place after 18 holes. Ken Keller of Youngstown State is leading the individual race with an opening round of 66. Wright State is leading as a team with a 282, seven shots better than the next team.
The second round of the Horizon League Championship will have tee times beginning at 8:20 a.m. The last Mastodon will tee off at 9 a.m.
