Mastodon Women's Volleyball Heads to Xavier Tournament This Weekend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team will head to Cincinnati, Ohio to play Eastern Michigan, Virginia and Xavier this weekend.

Know Your Foes
• Eastern Michigan is 0-3 after opening the season at Michigan State's tournament. The Eagles fell to Louisiana, Fairfield and MSU. Samantha Basham and Sabrina Gremm are the Eagles' top two offensive options.
• Virginia is 2-1 with wins over East Tennessee State and North Florida, and a 3-0 loss at Florida. UVA has four attackers averaging between 2.0 and 3.0 kills per set: Jayna Francis, Abby Tadder, Chloe Wilson and Grace Turner.
• The host Musketeers are 3-0 with three five-set wins at Buffalo's tournament. Xavier got wins over UAB, Horizon League foe Cleveland State, and Buffalo. Brooklyn Cink is one of Xavier's top threats, averaging 3.33 kills per set this season. Xavier assistant coach Andre Foster was a graduate assistant coach for the Mastodons last year.

• Purdue Fort Wayne and Eastern Michigan have played 21 times dating back to 1979. All but one of those matches came since the Mastodons moved Division I in 2001. Purdue Fort Wayne has won 11 matches, but EMU took the last match in 2019. Sidney Schiller had three kills and Rachael Crucis had 13 digs.
• Purdue Fort Wayne has never played Virginia.
• Xavier has a 4-3 record against the Mastodons. Three of the matches came in 1982-83. Purdue Fort Wayne has one win over Xavier since becoming Division I, a 3-1 win in 2008. The two teams have not played since 2010.

Sidney Schiller was named the Most Valuable Player of the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational in the opening week of the season. The senior outside hitter averaged 4.00 kills per set on a .180 hitting clip. She had a pair of double-doubles against Canisius (15 kills, 11 digs) and Western Illinois (19 kills, 15 digs). Her 19 kills against Western Illinois were a career-high.

Purdue Fort Wayne won the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational on August 27 thanks to two wins over Lindenwood and Western Illinois. Sidney Schiller (MVP), Molly Mirabelli and Iris Riegel were named to the All-Tournament Team. It was the first tournament win for the Mastodons since SIUE's Cougar Classic in 2019.
