Mastodons Sweep Saint Francis (Pa.), Haffner Named All-Tournament

RICHMOND, Ky. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team finished its appearance in the Geri Polvino Invitational with a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-14) win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday (Sept. 10).
Taya Haffner, Purdue Fort Wayne's setter, finished with 32 assists and three kills in Saturday's match. She finished the tournament with 104 assists, 20 digs and 14 kills. She was named to the Geri Polvino All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
The Mastodons jumped out to a big lead in the first set, going up 15-5 after Haffner put down one of her three kills. The 'Dons used the comfortable lead to take the first set. Sidney Schiller had six kills on 11 attempts to lead Purdue Fort Wayne through the first.
Schiller and Iris Riegel were the one-two punch in the second set, recording three and four kills, respectively. There were 10 ties and five lead changes in the set, but the biggest swing came late. The Mastodons held off two set points and won the frame with a 4-0 run.
The third set was all Mastodons, as they rattled off an 18-6 start. Joanna Larsen got the kill that capped off a Schiller serving run. Savanna Rogers saw her first action as a Mastodon in the third, serving the ace that clinched the match. The 'Dons hit a match-high .444 in the final set.
Schiller finished with 12 kills on an efficient .345. Seven Mastodons had an ace. LonDynn Betts and Rachael Crucis had 15 and 14 digs, respectively.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 4-5 while Saint Francis falls to 1-9. The Mastodons will be back in action next week when they visit Toledo to face the Rockets and Duquesne on September 16-17. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN3.
