'Dons Blank Southern Indiana For Second-Straight Shutout Win
9/11/2022 3:58:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer overcame a slippery Hefner Soccer Complex to take a 1-0 win over Southern Indiana on Sunday (Sept. 11).
Zoe Greenhalge scored just 1:51 after kickoff. Due to the rain, the USI keeper lost control of a hard-struck ball from Greenhalge from well outside the 18. She fumbled the ball and it hopped over her out-stretched body and into the back of the net. It was the first shot of the match for either side.
The Mastodons were able to hold the Screaming Eagles to seven shots, five on target, for the rest of the game. The 'Dons out-shot USI 17-7, including 8-2 in the first half.
After the halftime break, Kelsey Gallagher had a great look at the net to try to extend the lead to 2-0. She volleyed a loose ball from just a step outside the 6', but it was saved by USI's keeper.
Just moments later, Samantha Castaneda kept her scoreless weekend alive by making a diving save near the left post in the 55th minute. Castaneda has not allowed a goal in the last 213 minutes of play. She finished with five saves against the Screaming Eagles to notch the clean sheet.
Morgan Reitano and Mackenzie Evans had a game-high four shots each.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 4-2-2, the best winning percentage in non-league play in program history (with at least two games played). Southern Indiana falls to 3-3-2. The Mastodons will open Horizon League play at the Hefner Soccer Complex on Sunday, September 18 with a 1 p.m. kick against IUPUI.
