Know Your Foe
IUPUI is 5-0-3 this season with just one common foe as the Mastodons: Bellarmine, which both teams tied. The Jaguars also played at Southern Indiana, but the game was washed out due to rain. Maya Lacognato is the two-time Horizon League Player of the Week that leads IUPUI with five goals, the latest of which came in a 4-2 win over Cleveland State to open Horizon League play.
Series History
IUPUI and Purdue Fort Wayne have played 18 times dating back to 2002, nearly meeting every season. The two have played in the Summit and Horizon Leagues together, playing 12 league matches. The 'Dons are 7-7-4 against IUPUI, with the Jaguars taking the last four.
Home Sweet Hefner!
Purdue Fort Wayne is unbeaten at the Hefner Soccer Complex this season, sporting a 3-0-1 record at home. The 'Dons beat Chicago State (4-1), Ball State (1-0) and Southern Indiana (1-0), and tied Bellarmine (1-1) in front of their home crowd.
Old Rivalries
IUPUI and Purdue Fort Wayne have a storied history between the two athletic departments. After the Mastodons went Division I in 2001, the two teams played nearly every season until 2017. The teams were fellow members of the Summit League from 2007-17, when IUPUI left to join the Horizon, then the 'Dons followed suit and joined the HL in 2020.
Spectacular Sam!
After leading the Mastodons to a 2-0 week against Valparaiso and Southern Indiana, Samantha Castaneda was showered with accolades. She was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week and was selected to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. It was her second Horizon League weekly honor and the program's first-ever representative on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. Her goalkeeping against the Beacons featured a saved penalty kick with no time on the clock to secure the win.
Brick Wall Castaneda
Samantha Castaneda owns a 1.19 career goals against average, which is the best in program history among those that played at least 750 minutes in the net. Her mark of 0.88 GAA this season is the best for a year-long average, topping Sam Pavlika's 1.07 in 2012. Castaneda's seven shutouts in her career is the third-best in program history behind Pavlika's 10 and Shannon Lynn's nine.
Mack to the Max!
Mackenzie Evans is the leading goal-scorer for the Mastodons this season with four goals. She had a pair of goals and an assist against Chicago State in the season opener and her third against Bellarmine. Her most recent goal came at Southern Illinois on September 4.
She's Been Around
Gabrielle Fanning is in her sixth year of college soccer, playing her first season in 2017. With a redshirt campaign in 2018 and the extra year due to the blanket COVID-19 waiver, Fanning is the only student-athlete at Purdue Fort Wayne of any sport to be playing her sixth year with the Mastodons. She is also the only current student-athlete to play under the "Fort Wayne" athletics branding, thus the only to play in blue and white uniforms. She has played in 72 games as a Mastodon, with 69 starts, and has a chance to become the all-time career leader in both categories.
I Like That!
Purdue Fort Wayne's 4-2-2 non-league record (.625) was the best winning percentage in non-league play in program history with at least two games played. The Mastodons were 1-0 in non-league in the shortened spring 2021 season.
Definitely Not Mid
This season was the first time since 2003 that the Mastodons have recorded two positive results against the Mid-American Conference. The 'Dons beat Ball State 1-0 and tied Toledo 1-1.
Be Aware!
In the newest rule changes from the NCAA, overtime will no longer be played in the regular season. Overtime will only be played in postseason games, and will no longer be golden goal, meaning both 10-minute overtime periods will be played to completion.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne defeated Southern Indiana 1-0 at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The Mastodons got a goal from Zoe Greenhalge in the second minute of a very rainy contest.
Coming Up
Purdue Fort Wayne will continue Horizon League play with another home game against another team near the top of the league standings after non-league play: Robert Morris.
