Vruggink Scores in Final Seconds to Tie IUPUI
9/18/2022 4:20:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Rylee Vruggink's goal with two seconds left was the equalizer in Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer's 2-2 tie with IUPUI on Sunday (Sept. 18) in the Mastodons' Horizon League opener.
With less than 30 seconds left, IUPUI had a shot that sailed high. Moving quickly, Samantha Castaneda sent her subsequent goal kick into IUPUI territory to flip the field. Morgan Retiano sent a pass to Gigi Riccardi, then Ricciardi played the ball for Vruggink to beat the Jaguar keeper one-on-one and send the ball into the net for the tie. It was Vruggink's second goal of the season, with both coming in the last nine days.
After halftime, the Mastodons got a penalty kick of their own. A Jaguar got a yellow card in the box in minute 60, setting up Zoe Greenhalge for the PK.
It was nearly as even as matchups come, with IUPUI edging the Mastodons in shots 14-12, 7-6 in shots on goal. Vruggink led Purdue Fort Wayne with four shots, three on target. Kelsey Gallagher had three shots, with one on frame. Castaneda finished with five saves.
Purdue Fort Wayne starts its Horizon League season with a positive result for the second year in a row. The 'Dons move to 4-2-3, 0-0-1 Horizon. IUPUI stays unbeaten at 5-0-4, 1-0-1. Purdue Fort Wayne will return to the pitch at the Hefner Soccer Complex on Thursday (Sept. 22) with a league game against Robert Morris.
