ESTERO, Fla. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team made 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from 3-point range to defeat Delaware 88-74 on Saturday (Nov. 25), led by a career-high 27 points from Amellia Bromenschenkel.
The senior guard from Mendota, Illinois was hyper-efficient, making 11-of-14 from the floor, 3-of-5 from the 3-point line and 2-for-2 from the stripe. She added four rebounds, three assists and a steal. In 33 minutes, she was +18 in the +/- category.
Through two games at the Gulf Coast Showcase, Bromenschenkel is averaging 21.5 points and 5.0 boards while shooting a scorching 68 percent (17-of-25) from the floor and 50 percent (5-of-10) from 3-point land.
The Mastodons trailed by as many as 10 just before halftime, but shooting 55.6 percent from 3-point range in the second half was helpful. The 'Dons were 19-of-29 (65.5 percent) from the field after the break and 5-of-9 from deep. Bromenschenkel had 18 of her 27 points in the second half.
Shortly after the break, Purdue Fort Wayne scored a quick six points in less than 90 seconds to make it a two-point game. The 'Dons took their first lead of the second half with 5:56 left in the third quarter when Bromenschenkel drained a triple. They never trailed again.
For good measure, Audra Emmerson hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left in the third quarter. On the inbounds, Bromenschenkel swiped the pass and dropped in a layup to make a three-point lead an eight-point lead heading into the final break. This capped off a 28-12 advantage for the quarter.
The Mastodons shot a game-best 66.7 percent (8-of-12) in the fourth quarter with three triples. The 'Dons had a 9-0 run spanning two minutes early in the fourth, which was their best run of the game. In this stretch, Ryin Ott had a free throw, Emmerson and Bromenschenkel hit threes, and Destinee Marshall had a mid-range jumper.
The Blue Hens got it back within 10 with 4:01 to go, but Marshall squashed any comeback attempt with an old-fashioned 3-point play. Shayla Sellers and Emmerson put the icing on with seven combined points in a minute stretch to bring the lead up to 14 and its final score of 88-74.
The Mastodons had just nine turnovers while forcing Delaware into 13. Nine of UD's turnovers were in the second half.
