Mastodons Set to Play Caitlin Clark and No. 5 Iowa in Gulf Coast Showcase

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team will be visiting Estero, Florida to play in the Gulf Coast Showcase this weekend. The Mastodons' first-round matchup is No. 5 Iowa on Friday night (Nov. 24) at 7:30 p.m.

Iowa is 4-1 to start the year and is coming off a 113-90 win over Drake. The Hawkeyes' one loss came to the Kansas State Wildcats, who knocked off Iowa in Iowa City 65-58. The Hawkeyes are led by 2023 AP Player of the Year Caitlin Clark, who is averaging 30.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

This is the first meeting between Purdue Fort Wayne and Iowa. It will also be the first meeting for the other two opponents the Mastodons will face, no matter which teams they are.

Shayla Sellers was selected as the Horizon League Player of the Week on November 20 after leading the Mastodons to a 70-64 overtime win at Southern Illinois. She scored 20 points, shot 60 percent from the floor and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Sellers added five rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals in the win.

The Mastodons are 1-29 against the Big Ten in program history, with the one win coming over No. 21 Michigan State in 2013, which was the first win over a top-25 team in program history. In recent history, the 'Dons played two Big Ten teams a year ago (at Michigan State and vs. No. 15 Maryland). The 'Dons had eight blocks at Michigan State, the most against a Power 5 program in school history, and held MSU to 11.1 percent from the 3-point line, the Spartans' lowest 3-point shooting in five years. The 'Dons hosted Maryland last year, pitting Shayla Sellers against her sister Shyanne. Shyanne slowed down her older sister, Shayla, but Amellia Bromenschenkel had a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds, the program's first double-double against a Power Five team. Purdue Fort Wayne held Southern Illinois to just two points over the final 8:31 of regulation in the Mastodons' comeback win. The 'Dons trailed by 11 at the 8:31 mark and tied up the game to force overtime. They did it without making a 3-pointer.
