Mastodon MVB Falls in MIVA Opener at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team dropped its MIVA opener on Friday night (Feb. 10) at Lindenwood 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 25-23, 27-29, 15-11).
The opening set was 6-6 before Lindenwood went on an 8-2 run from which the Mastodons never got back within two. Jon Diedrich had an ace to bring it within three at 17-14, but the Lions ran away with the set after a 5-0 run.
The Mastodons had an 8-2 run midway through the second set to go up 12-8 after Wilmer Hernandez had a kill. Bryce Walker put the exclamation point on the equalizing set with an ace.
Lindenwood led 15-13 at the media timeout in the third set before the Mastodons forced the Lions into four-straight attack errors. Two of them were blocked by Ryan Steponaitis, Hernandez and Mark Frazier. The Lions responded with a 5-1 run to go up 22-20 and put the set just out of reach.
The fourth set saw Lindenwood lead by as many as three for a majority of the frame. The Mastodons called timeout, icing the server for an error, then setting up for kills from Diedrich and Frazier. The 'Dons went up one with another kill from Diedrich. The Lions went up 24-23, but the Mastodons held off the match point, then ultimately got a kill from Walker and a block from Steponaitis and Frazier.
After a 6-6 tie in set five, the home team went on 6-2 push, putting them up 12-8. The 'Dons got it within two on a kill from Walker, but Lindenwood scored three of the last four, including a challenged match point.
Diedrich had a team-high 17 kills, followed by Frazier with 15 and Walker with 10. Lindenwood was led by AJ Lewis and Carter Stenmark, who had 18 kills each. Rayshawn Bonner had nine blocks.
The Lions out-dug the Mastodons 53-37. Noah Melendez had a match-high 11 digs. Diedrich had three aces and Walker had a pair.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 9-2 and starts MIVA play 0-1. Lindenwood improves 3-5, 1-0 MIVA. The Mastodons will take on Quincy on Saturday night (Feb. 11) at 8 p.m.
