Purdue Fort Wayne MVB Cruises to Seventh Win

FAIRFAX, Va. - Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball's three-set streak continued on Friday night (Feb. 3), as the Mastodons beat Mount Olive 25-21, 25-19, 27-25 in the DC Challenge.
Purdue Fort Wayne has now won six matches in a row, all in 3-0 fashion.
The Mastodons used a balanced attack to take down the Trojans. Jon Diedrich (11), Mark Frazier (10), Hernandez (6) and Bryce Walker (6) split the majority of the kill load.
Against a former rival from the Conference Carolinas, Noah Melendez dug out a season-high 10 Trojans attacks. The Mastodons' 29 digs were also a season-high.
Diedrich led the way in the opening set, hammering down five kills. The 'Dons had to fight back from a four-point deficit early on, but Wilmer Hernandez' service elevated the Mastodons to a 19-16 lead. The senior outside hitter had an ace in this 6-0 run. Purdue Fort Wayne had a 5-2 final stretch that included a pair of blocks, the latter of which was a triple block on set point.
Mount Olive and Purdue Fort Wayne were knotted at 14 in the second set after a 4-0 UMO run. The Mastodons were clutch down the stretch again, pulling together a 7-2 run. Diedrich had a kill, allowing Hernandez to get the kill on set point.
The Trojans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set of which the Mastodons had to dig their way out. It took until 23-22 before the Mastodons took a lead. Diedrich had a kill that set up match point, but UMO held off one and even had a set point of its own. Walker took over on the final stretch, getting a kill and a solo block in the final three points of the match. Walker had a 4-0-7 effort in the third set.
Purdue Fort Wayne hit .301 as a team, led by Walker's .500 (6-0-12). Mount Olive's Gonzalez Pedro had an impressive 12-0-17 (.706) performance against the 'Dons.
The Mastodons improve to 7-1 while Mount Olive falls to 4-2. The 'Dons will play George Mason tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 4) at 7:30 p.m.
