Lewis Defends Home Court in Error-Ridden Match

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team dropped a MIVA match on Saturday night (March 25) at Lewis 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-22).
The two teams went back and forth to start the match, with Lewis pulling out to an 11-8 lead. The 'Dons got three kills from Jon Diedrich, Wilmer Hernandez and Diedrich to even up. The opening set was ultimately decided by an 8-2 Mastodon run capped off by a pair of hitting errors by Lewis. Diedrich got the kill to give the 'Dons a 1-0 lead.
The second set was leaning Lewis' way the entire way after the Flyers went up 8-4. The two teams combined for 17 errors in the second set. The third was very similar, as the two teams had 17 more miscues. Lewis took advantage of the early errors to go up 14-4.
The Mastodons came out firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 7-3 lead after a kill from Carlos Mercado. Lewis evened up the set at seven apiece, then the two teams traded runs until the 'Dons led 18-17. Then the last run of the night came, with Lewis winning eight of the last 11 points.
Lewis out-hit the Mastodons .269 to .093. Lewis had 20 service errors and five aces, the 'Dons with 16 errors and three aces. Diedrich had two of the aces.
Diedrich finished with a team-high 14 kills. Lewis had 15 kills from Max Roquet.
Purdue Fort Wayne and Lewis now both have records of 14-10, 5-5 MIVA. The Mastodons will return home for their final homestand of the regular season with Quincy and Lindenwood on Thursday and Saturday (March 30, April 1).
