Betts Named to All-Tournament Team But 'Dons Fall at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne closed the first weekend of the 2023 season with a 25-18, 25-11, 25-21 loss at Ball State on Saturday (Aug. 26). Libero LonDynn Betts had a team-best 13 digs. Betts finished with double-digit digs in all three matches at Ball State, earning all-tournament team honors for her play. She averaged 4.20 digs over the three matches against Oklahoma, Gonzaga and Ball State.
Seven different 'Dons had a kill against Ball State. Newcomer Ashby Willis led the 'Dons with nine.
Four straight Ball State points in the first set forced a Mastodon timeout with the Cardinals up 9-5. Ball State would go on to win the frame 25-18. Panna Ratkai had an ace in the frame.
Ball State went up 2-0 in the match with a win in the second set.
The third set was the closest. Two Maggie Castleman kills highlighted a 6-0 Mastodon run to put the 'Dons ahead 12-9 in the third. It forced a Ball State timeout. Purdue Fort Wayne finished with 15 kills in the third set, but an 8-2 Ball State run saw the Cardinals take back control of the frame to go up 20-17. The run forced the Mastodons to ask for time. The Cardinals were able to trade points from there to get the victory.
Marie Plitt has a match-high 10 kills for the Cardinals.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-3. The Cardinals are now 2-1. The 'Dons travel to the Keystone state next weekend to play Stony Brook, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Manhattan in an event hosted by Saint Francis.
