Castleman Has Career Day as 'Dons Topple Seawolves

LORETTO, Pa. - Maggie Castleman had the best match of her career on Friday (Sept. 1) to lead Purdue Fort Wayne to a 3-1 win (24-26, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23) over Stony Brook in the opening match of the Red Flash Classic.
Castleman, a Heritage High School product, finished the match with a 24-kill, 10-dig double-double. Her 24 kills surpassed her previous career-best of 18. She managed a 6.00 kills per set average while hitting .447.
Panna Ratkai also had a career-bests of 18 kills and 16 digs for a double-double. The redshirt-freshman also hit over .400, finishing at .410.
Purdue Fort Wayne finished the match with a .370 hitting percentage, its best in a match since the 2020 season.
The Mastodons went to Castleman early and often, finding her for nine kills in the opening frame. Iris Riegel chipped in six of her 17 kills in set one. Despite the 'Dons hitting .425, the Seawolves took a 1-0 lead.
Castleman was slowed down after set one compared to the first, but still hit over .400 in the last three sets. Ratkai joined Castleman to form a two-headed monster, as the two combined for 30 kills over the last three sets.
The Seawolves and Mastodons were trading spurts of points in the second set, but once Stony Brook led 16-14, the Mastodons rattled off an 11-3 run to close the set. The third set was more of the same, as the 'Dons ran up a 10-5 lead before Stony Brook called time. The Seawolves got within four, but no closer, for the rest of the set. The 'Dons hit .424 and .429 in the second and third sets.
The Mastodons were in danger of being forced into a fifth when Stony Brook was up 21-19 in set four, but they got two kills from Riegel and a pair of attack errors from the Seawolves to bring it to a 23-all tie. From there, Castleman got her final two kills of the night to shut the door on the comeback bid.
Taya Haffner's 53 assists (13.25 per set) led to the Mastodons' .370 hitting percentage. LonDynn Betts added a double-double with 15 digs and 10 assists, the latter of which doubled her previous career-best.
The Mastodons will wrap up the Red Flash Classic on Saturday (Sept. 2) with a pair of matches against Saint Francis (Pa.) and Manhattan at 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively. The Mastodons have never lost to Saint Francis (7-0 all-time) and have never played Manhattan.
