Mastodons Win Red Flash Classic, Ratkai Named Tournament MVP

LORETTO, Pa. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team won the Red Flash Classic on Saturday (Sept. 2), picking up wins over Saint Francis (Pa.) and Manhattan to go 3-0 on the weekend.
Redshirt-freshman Panna Ratkai was named the tournament MVP for her efforts over the three matches. She averaged 4.69 kills per set, while hitting nearly .400, and added 2.69 digs per set.
Iris Riegel was also selected to the All-Tournament Team. She averaged 2.92 kills per set with a .405 hitting percentage and pitched in 0.62 blocks per set.
GAME 1 - Purdue Fort Wayne 3, Saint Francis (Pa.) 2
Purdue Fort Wayne won the morning match against the Red Flash 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-10) thanks in large part to its two All-Tournament selections.
Ratkai finished with 22 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, while Riegel chipped in 12 kills.
Ratkai started off hot with seven kills on 11 attempts in the opening set. The Mastodons took the opening set after a 5-2 stretch over the final seven points. Ratkai had three kills in this set, then Riegel had the set-winner. Saint Francis evened the match thanks to a 5-0 start to set two, never trailing again.
After an 8-8 stymie, the Mastodons out-scored the home Red Flash 17-8 from there on. Ratkai had four of her five kills in the set after the 19-point mark. Set four went to SFU despite the two teams being knotted at 21. It was a pair of blocks that gave the Red Flash a late advantage.
The Mastodons had all the advantage in the fifth set after going up 6-1 to start. This stretch included an ace from Ashby Willis, two kills from Ratkai, and a block from Abby Stratford and Joanna Larsen. The Red Flash cut the lead to one, but the 'Dons got a kill from Riegel and two kills from Willis to go back up four. Ratkai finished the match with two more kills in the last three points. The 'Dons hit a scorching .563 in the closing set while holding SFU to a meager -0.05.
Saint Francis fell to 3-2.
GAME 2 - Purdue Fort Wayne 3, Manhattan 1
The afternoon match went to the Mastodons as well, as they beat Manhattan 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-16) to sweep the tournament.
Manhattan jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a 5-0 start in set one. The 'Dons never tied the set back up.
Set two went to the 'Dons after 4-0 and 5-0 runs to go up 19-10. Savanna Rogers started to find her groove here with a pair of kills and a block in the set. Ratkai went 6-0-7 in the second set, leading the 'Dons to a .500 team hitting percentage.
A block from Stratford and Riegel set the tone for set three, then Taya Haffner aced the Jaspers to accentuate the point. The 'Dons never trailed. Despite a 4-0 run by Manhattan late, the Mastodons rattled off their own 3-0 mini-run with kills from Jena Medearis and Maggie Castleman. Haffner aced the Jaspers again to finish the set and go up 2-1.
The Mastodons were comfortably in control in set four as well, jumping out to an 8-3 lead after Rogers got one of her career-high 10 kills. When Manhattan tied it up at eight, the 'Dons got a pair of blocks and two kills from Ratkai to go up 12-9. The 'Dons finished the set on a 5-0 run, which featured a kill and ace from Rogers, a block from Medearis and Haffner and a kill from Ratkai.
The Mastodons finished the match hitting .314, while adding nine aces. Ratkai hit .421 with 21 kills. Riegel hit .533 on her nine kills. Stratford was uber-efficient, going 6-0-7 for .857.
Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 3-3 while holding Manhattan winless at 0-6. The Mastodons will head east for the Ellicott Hotels Western New York Invitational, where they will play Kent State, Niagara and Canisius on September 8-9.
