Eagles Drop in For Mastodons at Virtues Intercollegiate

NASHPORT, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team carded four eagles on Monday (Sept. 25), which was the most of any team in the Virtues Intercollegiate.
Kasey Lilly was the Mastodons' headliner after the opening 36 holes of the event. He finished the day with a 73-70-143 to possess 26th place. He recorded two of the Mastodons' four eagles, with both in round two. In the morning round, Lilly started par, birdie, then rattled off 14 more pars in the next 16 holes. This included a stretch of nine pars in a row for an even and bogey-free front nine. In the afternoon, Lilly started with a birdie on hole 10, bogeyed 11 then started his move back into the red. He had four pars before an eagle on hole 16, the 527-yard 16th hole. Later on, he eagled the 563-yard fourth, which is the No. 1 handicap hole on the Virtues Golf Club's scorecard.
Burke Pitz joined Lilly in the eagle club when he shot 72-73-145. Pitz' eagle came on hole 10 in the morning round, bringing him back to even for the round. He had 15 pars in round one, including eight-straight on the front nine. In the afternoon, Pitz had birdie putts fall on holes three, six, seven and 10. In the eight-hole stretch, he made up three strokes. He is in a tie for 36th with teammate Nick Holder.
Holder had the fourth eagle of the group. After an opening round of 71 that featured five birdies, Holder eagled hole four to match Lilly. His birdies in the morning came on holes four, six, seven, 15 and 17. In round two, he shot 74 to finish at 145 thanks to his eagle and a birdie on 16.
Rebounding from an opening round of 77, Hunter Mefford shot 71 in the afternoon to finish in a tie with Nick Bellush for 55th. Mefford had birdies on holes four and 10 in the morning, then found five more in his second time through the course. He birdied one, four, 10, 11 and 14 to shoot 1-under in round two.
Bellush had nothing worse than a bogey all day, shooting 75-73-148. He drained birdies on holes two, six and seven in the morning. He started round two with a birdie on the 198-yard 14th, then birdied holes six and 10 later.
The Mastodons were 16-under as a team on par-5s. As a group, the Mastodons shot 578. The 'Dons are ahead of Horizon League foes Robert Morris (579), Youngstown State (589) and Cleveland State (589). They are nipping at the heels of Northern Kentucky (577) and Wright State (570).
Marshall's Ryan Bilby is leading the individual race with a 10-under opening day of 134. Michigan is in the lead as a team with a 552.
The final round of the Virtues Intercollegiate will tee off on Tuesday (Sept. 26) morning.
