'Dons Take Ninth at Virtues Intercollegiate

NASHPORT, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf team took ninth at the Virtues Intercollegiate on Tuesday (Sept. 26), shooting 291-287-290-868 as a team.
The Mastodons topped four of the five Horizon League teams in the field, only behind 2023 runner-up Wright State (857). The 'Dons beat Northern Kentucky (877), Youngstown State (883), Robert Morris (883) and Cleveland State (889).
Kasey Lilly was one of two players in the field that finished the week with three eagles. After two in round two, he started round three with an eagle on hole 10. He followed it up with birdies on 11 and 13 to go to 4-under. The rest of the way, he had just two holes of bogey or worse, finishing at an even 72. For the tournament, he shot 215 and tied for 23rd.
Vaulting up 19 spots on the leaderboard in the final round, Hunter Mefford shot a 2-under 70 in round three. He started his Tuesday with a birdie on hole 10 before four pars in a row. After going back to even with a bogey on 15, he birdied 16 and 18 to go to 2-under. Bogeys on three and four brought him back to even, but he used birdies on seven and nine to go back to 2-under for the day. Mefford finished the tournament with a two-day total of 77-71-70-218 to tie for 36th.
Nick Bellush also moved up 17 spots in round three, shooting 71. He had a relatively clean scorecard, starting with a birdie on 10. After a bogey on 17, he had pars or better the rest of the way. He had a bogey-free front nine with a birdie on seven, the 557-yard par-5. He finished the event in a tie for 38th with a 75-73-71-219.
Nick Holder finished the tournament in 51st, turning in 71-74-77-222. He started par, par, birdie, par, then ended with six holes of bogey-free golf. This included a birdie on hole seven. Burke Pitz was one shot back of Holder, turning in 72-73-78-223 to tie for 53rd. He birdied holes 10 and eight.
Michigan won the event with an 830 team score, led by Yuqi Liu and Ben Hoagland, who bot shot 207 to tie for first individually. The Mastodons are back in action on Friday (Sept. 29) when they play in The Indy, an individual-only event in Richmond, Indiana.
