
Mastodons Earn Program's 1000th Win Thanks to Five Set Win at Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Purdue Fort Wayne won their 1000th match in women's volleyball program history on Saturday (Sept. 9). For the second match in a row, the 'Dons rallied from a one-set deficit on their way to taking down Canisius 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 15-10).
Panna Ratkai and Maggie Castleman both finished in double figures in both kills and digs. Ratkai led the way with 19 kills while Castleman had 14; Ratkai totaled 14 digs while Castleman had 13. Jena Medearis also posted double digit kills with 12. She was efficient too, hitting .600 in Saturday's match. On the defensive end, LonDynn Betts paced the 'Dons with 25 digs.
Canisius took the first set by five points. Ratkai led the 'Dons in the first set with five of the team's 12 kills in the set.
Medearis had six kills in the second set, including three down the stretch that helped the 'Dons hold on to the lead. Medearis earned the set point with a soft kill that dropped in the middle of a few Canisius players.
Ratkai totaled seven kills in the third set. With the 'Dons trailing by three, Ashby Willis' kill turned the serve over to Ratkai. She served an ace and then delivered the kill on the next point to tie the score at 20. Purdue Fort Wayne held steady with Canisius for the next few points, but Canisius managed to take two points in a row and win the third set.
Ratkai and Castleman each had three kills in the fifth set, but it was Nicole Jones who delivered the final kill that lifted the 'Dons over Canisius. Jones had seven of her 39 assists in the fifth set.
Lauren Hubert had 21 kills for Canisius.
The 'Dons improve to 5-4. Canisius falls to 2-6. Purdue Fort Wayne hosts Miami (OH) next weekend to start the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational Presented by Hyatt Place.
