FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball program played in front of a crowd of 1,385 on Friday night (Jan. 26), which was the most for a men's volleyball match in Fort Wayne since 2008. The Mastodons fell to No. 4 Hawai'i 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-12).
The crowd of 1,385 was the most since the final game of the 2008 season, a matchup with No. 1 Penn State. That crowd was 1,390 fans in the season following the Mastodons' appearance in the national championship match.
Mark Frazier led the 'Dons for the second time in as many nights with 10 kills and two blocks. Jon Diedrich added eight kills on an efficient .571 hitting. Hawai'i turned in the better hitting percentage of .487 to the 'Dons' .216 with Alaka'i Todd and Spyros Chakas combining for 30 kills for the Rainbow Warriors. Frazier and Diedrich each hit four kills in the first set. The 'Dons led early, but fell behind when Hawai'i scored three points in a row and forced a Purdue Fort Wayne timeout. Out of the timeout, the 'Dons went point for point with Hawai'i, but weren't able to hold off Hawai'i to catch up in the first set. In the second set, Frazier had three of the 'Dons' first five kills and kept the score tied at six. Hawai'i took the next four points in a row to take a lead the Rainbow Warriors did not give up. Hawai'i controlled the third set out-hitting the 'Dons .458 to .000. Hawai'i's record moves to 5-1 while Purdue Fort Wayne drops to 4-3. The Mastodons will be back at home again next weekend with Saint Francis (Pa.) and No. 9 Penn State. Those matches will be the Mastodons' homecoming weekend.
